Schools in Southport are home to two of the Gold Coast's oldest and most prestigious private schools. TSS 'The Southport School,' an all-boys school, and St Hilda's, constructed in the early 1900s, the only all-girls school in the area. These are two of Queensland's most prestigious schools. Accompanying the two private schools are Southport Primary and Southport High School, both well-established schools. Southport High School is well renowned for its range of exceptional excellence programs and recently celebrated its 100-year anniversary.

There are eleven high-rise structures planned for Southport, which is fast becoming one of the Gold Coast's real estate development hubs. Many of the new skyscrapers, such as Brighton on Broadwater and Pivotal Point, feature a combination of residences and commercial sites.

Located in Southport, Australia Fair is one of the Gold Coast's oldest and most popular shopping destinations. Adding to the cosmopolitan feel of Southport, is the quaint China Town precinct and the newly developed Queen St Plaza. In addition to the Broadwater parklands is the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre right on the Broadwater, which was constructed for the Commonwealth Games and has an Olympic sized pool, fully equipped gym and a licenced restaurant attached overlooking the water. The Broadwater parklands is the Gold Coast’s largest water playground for water sports enthusiasts and families just looking for a day out.
